You can create yourself an easy Flower Costume using these instructions:

Find a green sweat suit. Cut leaf shapes out of green felt and glue them here and there on your sweat suit.

Again using the same green color felt cut out two 2 - 3 inch strip that is long enough to fit around your neck and over lay on the back by about an inch. Cut large petal shapes out of felt. Glue the straight edge of the petals along the edge of one of your felt strips. Glue the other felt strip on top of the petal edges and the other felt strip to secure them in place. Once the glue is dry, use self-adhesive velcro to make a "collar" out of the strip you cut.

Australia's Largest Flower Show

Wednesday 28th March, Sunday 1st April, 2007
Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens Melbourne Australia. The world renowned Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is entering its 12th year and is now regarded as the largest and most successful horticultural event in the Southern Hemisphere, rated amongst the top five flower and garden shows in the world.

Francine Rizza, of online Melbourne Florist says this prestigious flower show provides a great opportunity for a florist to showcase their skill's. Francine has exhibited her talent as a leading florist at the show and has won numerous awards for her skill as a fresh flower artist.

Francine continues; I was first selected about 8 years ago to exhibit in the Melbourne International flower show. The National Flower Centre Melbourne ran a competition to which they invited florists to submit an outline of a fresh flower display they wished to exhibit. My plan was a winner. Each florist was then given a ,000.00 sponsorship to use to build their display. The florists were excited by this prospect and were then expected to order all flowers required as well as props. The florists created amazing flower displays. It was a real chance for the florist to really showcase their skill as a florist in a very large display and venue.

My display was featuring fairies in a beautiful woodland filled with pastel flowers. Even the fairies were adorned with costumes of flowers and moss! The male fairy was dressed in guilded leaves and was dressed in a costume of fresh bush moss. He carried a wand made from an agapanthus flower head. I hired huge urns and filled them with many different types of flowers including lizianthus, delphinium, roses, Lillies and purple and lilac carnations. All of my family as well as friend, butler trainer Josephine Ive were involved in the mammoth floral creation. I'm quite sure I must have been the only Australian florist with her own International butler!

Our flower display was a real "Show Stopper"! It was difficult for the crowd to advance.

At that time our florist studio was located in Kew, Melbourne Victoria. It was called 'In Vogue Flowers'. Not only were we delighted, our customers were very excited too. I had by now gained a lot of respect from them as a skilled florist. This was a great advancement for my career as a florist and we were now being described as a leading Melbourne florist!

The following year I was once again invited, this time by management of the flower show to participate. They offered me a huge floor space of 44sq metres on the main floor, amongst all the large fresh flower growers and wholesale florists. It took me 3 days to pick myself up off the floor and tell friends and family the good news. I just couldn't believe I had been asked. I was the only retail florist in Melbourne and Australia to be given this honour. My career as a leading Melbourne florist had really begun.

This time we were given a guideline, the theme the florist had to abide by was titled "Reflections". We were instructed not to think of mirrors or water reflections, but other meanings of reflections. My great plan was blown apart and I had to come up with another idea.

Suddenly it came to me! I would create a flower display using 2 huge 8 x 12 ft [2.4 x 3.6 metres], guilt frames back to back in the centre which would represent a mirror. I then hired 2 identical mannequins and had one made up with harsh make-up, black cropped hair and long black eye lashes. I dressed her in a black sequinned dress and high heeled shoes. The other lady I dressed as a lady from the 1900's. Her make-up was soft and pastel, her hair was jet black and was placed up in an elaborate style. I hired her costume from "Malcolm's Costume Hire", Collingwood. It was an elaborate, richly coloured gown from the opera "Don Giovanni". I place them either side of the mirror reflecting their image. They were twins, born 100 years apart looking at one another with fascination.

Now for the flower display, I hired huge Grecian terracotta pots, some standing as high as 5ft, [167.6 centimetres]. The pots varied both in size and shape. All had a matching partner and were placed to reflect one another. On the modern side of the flower display they were filled with brightly coloured flowers such as gerbera, heliconia and lilliums. The display on the opposite side representing the 1900's was all in pastel, white, cream and lemon flowers. It was real class! I hired 2 beautiful mahogany arm chairs and requested the restorer upholster them both in florists foam so they could be elaborately decorated in flowers. They were displayed in a reflective manner. The deception was complete!

I really knew I had achieved, when I overheard 2 ladies having a conversation, One remarked to the other; "Oh my god, it isn't a mirror"! She had been adequately deceived!

For me as a florist, having been asked to participate in the Melbourne Flower Show has been a highlight in my career for which I shall be forever proud and grateful.

Staged, within the world heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building and surrounding south Carlton Gardens, the Melbourne International Flower Show is well established and features the best landscape and florist talent that Australia has to offer along side an extensive array of garden retail products.

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is a celebration of Australian lifestyle and our great outdoors. Along with residents and visitors to Melbourne, florists can be inspired by the vast range of fresh flower displays and learn about the care of flowers direct from the fresh flower experts and the flower growers.

A few facts about the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show:

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Which ones of these concepts do you prefer for a painting?
I am 18 and slowly losing my youth and I'll be 19 soon and it scares me because I'll be old and ugly and in a wheelchair before I know it.

I have decided to get a painting of myself done so that when I'm old, I'll look at it and think, I had youth inside of me, too, once.

I was thinking about hiring a painter to do it. A professional one.

    I thought of those concepts.

    1. I would want to be dressed all in white (perhaps in one of those Greek capes) in front of a nice Greek-like place, with large colums around which white sheets will be attached. I will have a dove on my shoulder and a small lamb at my feet to symbolise youth and innocence.

    2. I will be wearing the same white cape thing and there will be a begger on the floor, also dressed in a Greek costume but not a white one, and I will be handing him something, perhaps a flower or a golden coin, also in a Greek-like setting. My hand that isn't helping the begger will be raised up in the air and there will be a dove in it.

Which one do you prefer? How much does it cost to hire a painter?

    • ANSWER:
well said, real american, well said.

Help with a steampunk Halloween costume?

As usual, I'm throwing my Halloween costume together at the . I was struck by inspiration after finding a long white petticoat at the local Goodwill (man, I love that store). Over it, I'm wearing a dark gold knee-length silk dress with blue flowers embroidered on it, and over that I'm wearing an olive green military style jacket with buttons that at least look like brass.
I plan on putting my hair up in a Gibson tuck, and was considering modifying a pair of swim goggles and pinning them in my hair. I'm looking for advice on how to improvise a makeshift bustle to give my dress the proper shape. My character is a traveler who is involved in espionage. Can anyone give me some ideas for improvements?

What are cute costumes where i could incorporate a ?

I have been dying to wear this dress i got. Its got green, blue, and purple roses on it. I need a sexy (not slutty) costume idea for a halloween party

Sandy asks…

I need help with Halloween wedding ideas!?

Yes, I am getting married on Halloween next year. Well, not ON Halloween, since it's a Monday, but on the Saturday before. I need some help with some ideas. Here is what I have already.

I want the ceremony to be traditional. With colors in black, white, red, orange, and yellow. I found a dress that is white with red accents. My fiance will have a black suit with white shirt, red vest, and red tie. My matron of honor (that sounds so old) will be wearing an red dress of her choice. The flowers will be orange and yellow mums, sunflowers and orange, yellow, and red roses. Everyone will wear "Sunday best".

After the ceremony, I will allow time (1 or 2 hours [don't want it to be to long though]) for photos. The reason for the long time, there will be photos in formal wear and in costume.

The reception will be like a costume party. I want to also give time for everyone to change from "Sunday best" to costume.

At the reception we will have a pumpkin carving station and/or carved pumpkins as center pieces, but there will not be assigned seating. There will be a candy bar for everyone to get candy of all kinds (including sugar free for some friends and family that need that). Music will be a DJ that plays a mix of country, rock, Halloween, pop, and other popular and good dancing songs. The food will be a buffet that will be partly catered, but will also have some favorite family foods.

The whole thing will be in an old gothic style catholic church in New Orleans.

Please tell me if you think the time for photos and costume change is ok and if it runs long, what could the guest be doing or what they might think about that part. Also if you have any ideas, please let me know.

Oh, and I don't care if YOU like the ideas I have so far or not. Our families will. I just need help with extra details.

The best, most unique, and multiple ideas will get 10 points.
Oh, and the best man will have something similar to the groom.

andre1 answers:

Sounds like a fun wedding! Having the guests change into costumes might be a bit inconvenient for them, especially if there are folks coming in from out of town, from long distances or worse, having frumpy people who aren't really into wearing costumes. How about doing a masquerade-type party instead? Have your wedding favor be half masks in fun and vibrant colors. People can wear them all night and guess who is who. :)

As for the pumpkin carving station, you might want to be careful with that. It can get really messy. Having pre-carved pumpkins as centerpieces would be wonderful! Add in a candle and it will light up your table.

Happy Planning! :)

Donald asks…

Unique teen ? And how to get/make them?

I'm sixteen and Halloween is my favourite holiday of the year. Its really important to me, that I have the PERFECT costume.
I want something special, like I don't want anyone else to have the exact same costume.
I really love , and would love a cute costume that had to do with that, but I HATE Hermione. Its just this weird thing that I have. But if you have an idea for a Luna or Ginny costume that would be cool.
Also, I thought Pocahontas costume might be fun, but my hair is red ATM.

I have already been & do not want to be again:
A fairy
A princess
A flower child
A witch
A sailor

Any other unique, interesting ideas would be appreciated.

andre1 answers:

This is cute - and doesn't necessarily have to be Hermione - actually with red hair, Ginny would be perfect!

Not exactly Pocahontas, but still pretty cool:

I bet nobody else would think of Jessica Rabbit:

Gypsy is also fun (and you could make something similar to this out of a long flowing skirt and scarves)

Hope that gives you ideas, have fun!

Chris asks…

Grandma costume for Halloween?

I'm going to be a grandma for Halloween and so far, this is what I have-
silk flower muumuu
gray wig
"sensible" shoes
long socks
big purse
bright pink lipstick

Most of the things I have borrowed from my grandma. I'm going to make a latex face mask with wrinkles or draw them with eyeliner. Should I get big glasses?
Also, how do I make saggy boobs and butt?
Thanks in advance!

andre1 answers:

I did the Grandma costume a couple of years ago it was fun! Yes, the big glasses are a must. I found a great pair at our local thrift store that I just popped the lenses out of and wore on the end of my nose. I used knee high nylons and rolled them down to my shoes. I also borrowed a cane and walked hunched over and very "wobbly". You could try a huge bra and stuff it with socks then they would be saggy and lumpy boobs! Also you could stuff some big underwear with dish towels? Just an idea. Good luck have fun!

Lisa asks…

Costume for ?

I have a big black twh and i wanted to do a costume class this year and here are my ideas...

I thought about dressing him up as a knight's horse with like armor on the front(not real) and me dress up as a princess.

then i came up w/a complete opposite...
a fairy horse with flowers strewn through his mane and tail and braids and then i can be like wearing a long flowing dress.

does anybody have any ideas about how i can do this and how to make it easier.

Thanks!

andre1 answers:

I used to enter my 13 hand half-Arab gelding in costume class in parades, back in the early 1970's. We often got first or second place.

Here are links to two scans of pictures of us that I carry in my wallet.

In the first picture, I am wearing my medieval costume, with one of those tall pointy hats. You can not see my all purpose english saddle, under my long skirts or my darker-blue slim stretch-denim jeans, but they are there. My dark-blue outer dress, which is sewn out of drapery fabric and trimmed with white fake fur, is called a super-cote-hardy. It is like a very full-skirted, jumper; with the arm holes open clear down to my hips. My light-aqua-blue cotton under-gown has a circle skirt sewn to a princess-line bodice, with long narrow sleeves. I wore my belt over my under gown, but under my outer dress.

My hat is a poster-board cone covered with some of the fabric from my outer dress, with a strip of the white fake fur trimming the lower edge, and two narrow rectangles of chiffon fabric sewn to the tip. I found that I needed a chin-strap to hold it on. (In later parades, but not in this picture, I had a rhinestone necklace stitched above the fake fur trim on the hat.) Also in later parades I wore a mantle (like a small cape) made from a rectangle of chiffon, the length (from neck to lower edge) of which was the width of the fabric from selvage to selvage. I fastened it with a sweater clip.

Besides my english saddle, my pony has his pelham bit sewn into a bridle made of narrow, inside-out, tubes of fabric from my outer dress, with top stitching. The scalloped snaffle rein is fabric covered narrow rope. The breast collar and breeching are wider, inside-out, tubes of fabric from my outer dress, with top stitching. In later parades these had fake jewels sewn on, with rhinestone strips on the two face pieces of the bridle.

In the second picture, I am wearing a Roman toga costume made from an old sheet, with a red and gold band of Roman-key trim along the hem. The toga is sleevless, and only goes over one arm. The part that goes over my arm has an old metal coat button tied on with a peice of white string. Unseen, underneath my costume I have on a pair of shorts, to protect my legs. I am carrying a small, round, aluminum-foil covered, cardboard shield. I have gold-tone sandles on my feet. I have a wreath of grape leaves around my head, since this was for the Lodi Grape Festival Parade.

I am riding bareback. The corragated-cardboard Pegasus wings that I tried to make would not stay on, so I had to leave them off (they would have spooked him anyway). He is wearing a black leather slit-braid bridle covered in plastic gold-tone braid, with a curb bit that has gold spray-paint on the shanks, with a gold-tone small-dog choke-chain in place of a curb chain (it was a little long and didn't work very effectively), and gold cord reins. He won't stand still, because they placed us right behind a jazz band on a flat-bed.

A different year I did a Greek costume, but I don't have a picture of it.

Flower power was a slogan used by the American counterculture movement during the late 1960s and early 1970s as a symbol of passive resistance and non-violence ideology, rooted in the opposition movement to the Vietnam War. Hippies embraced the symbolism by dressing in clothing with embroidered flowers and vibrant colors, wearing flowers in their hair, and distributing flowers to the public. The term later became generalized as a modern reference to the hippie movement and a culture of drugs, psychedelic music, psychedelic art and social permissiveness.

Even though some of us might not experience the event directly, we have to admit that era have left one of the most influential fashion styles, the Hippies. Big flower pattern, tie-dyed shirts, platform shoes, vintage t shirt came with bell bottom jeans and wide leather belt, head band and long hair were adorned by the hippies.

About the author: I always collection of vintage leather jackets and alot of vintage retro clothing , therefore I buy it every month because it's cheaper

Mark asks…

Need a sparkly eye make-up/rhindestone design for fairy for young teen.?

I bought tiny rhinestones and spirit gum with remover for my daughter halloween costume. She is going to be a beautiful woodland fairy (nothing dark, gothic or scary) She is a young teenager so she dose not want anything childish but beautiful and "realistic" looking. I am looking for a pattern of what to draw around her eye (like fairy wings, flower, pretty pattern). I will draw the pattern around her eye then put spirit gum and outine the pattern in tiny rindestones. If you can find something on line please send me the link or if you are artisticly inclined please draw something new original and beautiful for me it would be great. Thank you so very much for all of your help and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Is this costume suitable for yaoi con?

I am going to my first yaoi-con (yay!) and I have a couple of costumes that my friend suggested, but I'm not sure. One is a homemade school girl outfit made to look like the japanese high school style. I'm pretty sure that that one would fit in. But the other one is a traditional kimono, is this one going to stick out like or sore thumb or would it be appropriate for the yaoi-con?
By-the-by, I have two kimono outfits, one is black with flower pattern and the other looks a lot like the outfit that Fuu from Samurai Shamploo wears. Any comment helps, thanks!

I think the kimono would stick out more than the school girl uniform, plus school girl uniform would be better for a yaoi convention xD

Robert asks…

good costume class ideas?

Me and my Friend are going to a "Halloween in Summer" show in a few weeks, all the classes you wear your costume in, and then there is a final costume class with a pattern song to go along with your outfit :) there are prizes at the end of the day for best costume idea and originality :) i own a liver chestnut QH with a crooked blaze and one white sock, my friend owns a dapple grey Quarter Pony/Arabian cross (looks more like an arabian though) and we were wondering if you guys liked any of these costume ideas....

for me and cooper (liver chestnut QH):
race-car and race-car driver (we would paint him and put cardboard wheels on, plus like sponsors and stuff to make him look like a race-car :P )
sheep and little bo peep (we have an idea to turn a lycra sheet into a sheep costume, and then we would find an old fashion dress for me)
Zebra and clown (my friend knows how to paint zebra stripes on horses, she's done it before xD)

for emma and bella (dapple grey arab pony):
unicorn and princess
cow and farmer (again, the magical uses of non-toxic paint :P )
flower garden and bee

Do you guys like these ideas? Do you have any other ideas? Thanks!

Well, i read an issue of equus fron a year or so ago and they had some :

a dragon and a knight. (you would have to get creative with a sewing machine)

a vet and a horse painted with bones. (fairly easy with paint if you have a horse bone "map")

the usual princess and unicorn

one of the students i ride with dressed up as and his pony was the broom stick

you could dress up as one or the scooby doo characters and paint some spots on the chestnit to be scooby-doo

one girl at the costume class went overboard and made a cardboard tonka truck truck to put on the horse, (whose show name really is "my tonka truck) it even had a working smokestack and a bucket on the side for "fuel".

That's all the ideas i have for now good luck in the show!

Betty asks…

im working on a head dress for a costume and i need a leaf pattern the when finished needs to be 4-5 inches long and 2-3 inches wide at the base. i need a leaf that can also double as petals for a flower.

andre1 answers:

There are many online sites that can teach you how to crochet, some may even have a pattern that you could follow
