Flower Costume Bee

Bumblebees are large colored flying insects that are active from spring till Autumn. They are different from honeybees in that they only store enough honey for 3-4 days and build nests instead of hives.They are not aggressive and do not sting unless they feel threatened, such as by being handled roughly or accidentally caught underfoot or in clothing. They go about their business peacefully, ignoring all but severe interference. Bumblebees are alsoless dependent on weather conditions during bloom. They fly at low temperatures, cloudy and windy weather.

Bumblebees are important pollinators in the temperate zones where they evolved and still dominate. In many parts of North America, they are by far the most numerous bees during the high summer.They are also a conservation issue, as they are sometimes threatened by human activities such as habitat fragmentation, pesticide use, disease transmission, and loss of floral resources. In the past few years, it appears that two species of bumblebees have gone extinct in the USA. Bumblebees are among the most endearing and familiar of our insects. The sight and sound of bees droning methodically from flower to flower is a quintessential part of a summer's day.

Bumblebees are still active at relatively low temperatures (around 10 degree C) and low light intensity levels. Even strong wind and drizzle will not keep them from doing their job.They are usually a very distinctive black and yellow colour, although they can be red and black or orange and black. Another obvious (but not unique) characteristic is the soft nature of the long, branched setae, called pile, that covers their entire body, making them appear and feel fuzzy.They are also of commercial importance, being vital to the agricultural industry. Many arable and horticultural crops depend on bumblebees for pollination to varying degrees.
