Just How Important are the Costumes in a Play?

Being a professional costume designer in the Los Angeles area, I have designed over 150 theatrical productions over the last 20 years. And one thing I have come to realize is that the costumes you use can make or break the success of your play.

One of the most complimentary things that could be said about my work when I do a show is when people don't notice the costumes. That means they were into the play and enjoyed the overall show. That means I did my job and the costumes did not distract the audience or draw their attention to one person instead of watching the whole show.

Now, if drawing attention to a certain character is called for in the context of the show, then that is a different story. But making sure the costumes all work together and communicate the message of each scene is vital to the success of the show.
